Field Operations Data Model Implementers Workshop
Mar 1 and 2, 2002
Des Moines, IA

What:
MapShots is hosting a workshop to explain the Field Operations Data Model to the industry. In addition to explaining the concepts of the model, we will demonstrate how desktop developers can use the components to consume field operations data that is generated by compatible drivers and how hardware manufacturers can implement these compatible drivers. Attendees will leave with a royalty-free copy of components that can be used to access data from GreenStar, AgLeader, Veris, Site Mate and other common industry formats.

Who:
This is a workshop designed for people that want to contribute to the evolution of field operations documentation standards and for developers that want to evaluate whether the components and data definitions that MapShtos has implemented are useful within their own applications. The content of the workshop is heavily oriented toward programming COM objects within the Visual Basic environment and using XML to transfer standardized data between applications.

Attendees should bring their own computers and development tools. Contact us if you need us to supply a computer for you.

Where:
The workshop is being hosted by Pioneer Hi-Bred at their Johnston office, just north of Des Moines, IA:

      7100 Nw 62nd Ave
      Johnston, IA
      50131, US

We recommend staying at the 4-Points Sheraton on Merle Hay Road in Des Moines. (Ask for the Pioneer rate). A workroom at this hotel will be monitored by MapShots staff on Friday and Saturday evening to provide hands-on support for attendees that want to complete sample or specific implementations before leaving the workshop.

When:
Friday March 1st and Saturday March 2nd, 2002.

Cost:
Attendees are responsible for their travel, lodging, and meal costs. There is no fee for workshop registration or software licenses.

More Information:
Send an e-mail to FODM@mapshots.com if you would like to register for this workshop or to be placed on a mailing list to receive more information.

Tentative Agenda

Session One - Using COM and XML within VB (Friday morning):
This optional session is specifically for developers. The focus is on creating COM servers within VB that implement standard interfaces, and upon creating clients from within VB that access standard interfaces implemented by COM objects. This session will also feature a general discussion of XML and the use of the XML DOM objects. There will be very little discussion of the Field Operations Data Model during this session, but an understanding of the content of this session will be essential to fully understanding the implementation of the Field Operations Data Model discussed in the remaining sessions.

Session Two - Introducing the Field Operations Data Model (Friday afternoon):
In this lecture session, we introduce the overview of FODM followed by a detailed discussion of the COM implementation and XML based persistence proposals. At the conclusion of the session a development CD will be distributed to all attendees. MapShots staff will remain available through the evening to assist in getting the development environment installed on attendee computers.

Session Three - Consuming Field Operations Data (Saturday morning):
We will spend the morning writing applications that consume field operations data from sample devices. We will also work on an application that retrieves field operations records from an XML-based persistence format such as one that might be used to transfer data from a desktop to a website.

Session Four - Generating Field Operations Data (Saturday afternoon):
This wrap up session demonstrates the development of a Field Operations Device Driver that plugs into the core Field Operations Data Model components. The specific device has not been selected yet. Preference will be given to implementing a device associated with a workshop attendee.

This session will go to at least 3:00. We will try to make the last half of the session optional for those attendees that want to return home Saturday evening. MapShots staff will remain available at the workshop or the hotel through Saturday evening and potentially into Sunday for attendees that need assistance with a specific implementation.
